“Towards a map of the radioactivity of the L’Aquila area”

Abstract:

In the Abruzzo region there is a lack of measurement of gamma-ray activity of soils and waters. The motivations of collecting thematic maps of the land will be shortly discussed. Therefore we planned to carry out systematic measurements of soils in the L’Aquila area. About 150 samples of soils have been collected, according to a square grid, and their content in term of K, U and Th have been determined. The activity of Caesium has been as well measured. The results show a limited content of K and U, with no large variations from site to site, in agreement with the expectations. The amount of Th is also limited, with a few exceptions where the Th content is up to five times the average value. Interpretation of this data is in progress. Open problems and possible future programs are also discussed.
